Experiences you'll have

Two-day trip to the must-see places of Karelia

You will visit two unique islands, Kizhi and Valaam, known far beyond Russia. An experienced guide will tell the history of these places, you will take a hydrofoil ride on lakes that look more like seas, and at the end of the day just relax from the bustle of the city in a hotel on the shores of Onega lake.

We can arrange this program in an individual format on dates convenient for you. See more in "Common questions".

Just for 2 days of the tour you will:

  • admire the architectural ensemble on Kizhi island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site
  • see the beautiful and majestic monastery, built on the Valaam island
  • make a ride on two of Europe's largest freshwater lakes
  • visit the cozy town of Sortavala near the Finnish border
  • have a guided tour around Petrozavodsk and learn the history of the capital of Karelia
  • relax in a spa hotel with a view of Onega lake

We accept bookings for groups of 6 or more

Note: for your group of two or more people, we can organize an individual program at any days suitable for you. See details in the "Common questions".

Itinerary

The journey starts at 7:50 am in Petrozavodsk, where you should get to on your own (see more details in "Common questions"). We are ready to help with ticket purchasing. If necessary, leave a comment in the application.

Day 1 Kizhi Ensemble and city tour of Petrozavodsk

After meeting at the train station in Petrozavodsk, you will have breakfast in a restaurant. Then you will be transferred to the embankment of Onega lake, from where you will go to Kizhi Island by hydrofoil (1,5-hour trip).

On the island you will have an excursion to the Kizhi Open-air museum of wooden architecture. You will see the 19th-century village and the world-famous wooden church ensemble which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. As the legend says, the church was built with one axe (according to another version – without nails) by Nestor the carpenter. The carpenter threw the axe into the lake so that no one could repeat the same magnificent structure.

After that you will have lunch and free time on the island. Then you will return to Petrozavodsk, where the city tour is waiting for you. You will get acquainted with the history of the capital of Karelia, visit its major places of interest and take pictures with the monument to Peter the Great.

In the evening you will be taken to a spa hotel, where you will have dinner and rest.

Day 2 Valaam Island and Sortavala town

Today you will have an early rise: at 6 am you will be driven to the Sortavala town (250 km). There you will have breakfast, and then take a hydrofoil to Valaam Island.

On the island, you will have an excursion to the famous Central monastery complex. You will get acquainted with the Orthodox Center of the Russian North and visit the main cathedral of the monastery. Afterward, the hydrofoil will take you to Nikon's Bay to see the hermitages of Valaam and its amazing nature. Here you will try simple monastic food in the refectory.

After the island tour, you will go back to Sortavala, where you will have a short excursion around this cozy town, which is situated near the Finnish border. After dinner in a cafe, you will be taken to the station, from where you will go home.
