The days of this trip are packed with exciting activities — discovering highlights of the largest city above the Arctic Circle, observing breathtaking landscapes of endless tundra and the Barents Sea, getting acquainted with northern Sami people’s culture, enjoying a company of reindeer and Siberian Huskies. The nights will be busy as well — you will get a chance to capture mesmerizing northern lights in one of the Russia’s best places for watching the phenomenon.

Journey to the Russian North

Starting your trip with arrival to Murmansk, you then will move away from big cities, deep into the heart of the Russian North. You will search for Northern lights in the Murmanks’ suburbs and the village of Teriberka by the Barents Sea — one of the 5 best Russia’s places to observe this natural performance. In ethnic Sami village you will meet the Sami indigenous people, visit the alley of sacred idols, try reindeer sledding and get encounters with cute Siberian Huskies in the Husky Park.

 

Highlights of the tour:

  • visiting the legendary icebreaker "Lenin" in Murmansk — the world's first nuclear-powered ship 
  • watching Northern lights at the Kola Peninsula
  • acquaintance with the traditions of the Russian Northern people — you will see the national Sami rawhide tents, feed a reindeer, taste venison and play the traditional folk games
  • trips to tundra and to the coast of the Arctic Ocean in the Teriberka village area

Itinerary

The journey starts in Murmansk, where you should get to by your own. We are ready to help you with the purchase of tickets. If necessary, please, leave a comment in the application.

 

Depending on the weather conditions, the program may change. Please, note, that in tours with arrivals in October and November, you will travel along the route by SUVs. At other time, from November till March, when there is a lot of snow on the Kola Peninsula, you will ride in sleds carried by snowmobiles. 

Day 1 Arrival to Murmansk

After meeting at the airport of Murmansk, you will get a guided walk around the largest city above the Arctic Circle. 

 

During the city-tour you will visit the second highest monument in Russia commonly known as Alyosha; official name is Defenders of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War. Besides the Alyosha, you will get acquainted with other historical places of the Second World War. You will get a stop at an obelisk with the coordinates of Murmansk — a popular place for taking a selfie.  

 

Later, you will go for a tour to the world's first nuclear-powered icebreaker Lenin. Don’t miss your opportunity to take photos inside and outside the legendary ship.

 

After dinner it will be time for watching Northern lights, if weather permits. You will go to the Aurora Village glamping, located 49 km away from Murmansk. Here, far from the city noise and lights, nature provides the best scene for the Aurora Borealis show. You will stay at the glamping for night. 

Day 2 At the coast of the Arctic Ocean

After breakfast you will move to Teriberka village, placed on the coast of the Arctic Ocean. On the way you will observe beautiful views of the Barents Sea, endless tundra and snow-capped mountains. In winter, the road turns into a real icy tunnel with the giant snow walls up to 3 meters high. Besides the views, there will be a chance of wildlife encounters: lemmings, deer, partridges, elks, gulls, and albatrosses. You might get a stop to build a traditional stone pyramid for good luck.

 

In the village of Teriberka you will learn the history of the place and see its daily life. The small settlement has become popular after launching Leviathan Russian feature film that was shot here. The film received the Golden Globe Award in 2015.

 

With luck, you might observe Northern lights on your way back from Teriberka area to Murmansk. 

 

After dinner in Murmansk you will go to search for Northern lights again. Then you will return to Murmansk and stay in a hotel.

Day 3 Visit to Sami ethnic village

After breakfas, journey to a Sami ethnic village Sam Syit is waiting for you. Here you will learn the Sami indigenous people’s culture and mode of life. You will see traditional Sami huts, feed reindeer and try reindeer sledding, visit a Husky Park with cute Siberian Huskies, play the Sami folk games and get a photo session in national costumes.

 

You will visit the alley of sacred idols. Seize your chance to make a wish in this place of power, all you need for it is just 6 yellow coins. 

 

You will have a traditional lunch in the village including fish soup and stewed venison. After the lunch you will come back to Murmansk. 

 

You will have dinner at hotel and then go searching for Northern lights again. Then you will return to the Murmansk hotel for overnight. 

Day 4 Departure

In the morning you will check out from the hotel and get your transfer to the airport.

Accommodation during the trip

At the first night of the journey you will stay at Aurora Village glamping. It is located 49 km away from the city of Murmansk in the direction of the village of Teriberka, on the shore of the Canentjavr Lake. Aurora Village includes 10 houses "Igloo" — a spherical construction made of glass. 30% of the sphere is panoramic window; each Igloo is 6 meters in diameter. Inside you will find 4 beds, WC with a shower, central heating, and heat-insulated floor with heating. 


The next two nights of the trip you will spend at Azimut Hotel 4* located in Murmansk city center. You will be accommodated in a comfortable double or twin room, equipped with a refrigerator, a TV, a safe and a private bathroom. The hotel has a bar, a conference hall and luggage storage.

The cost of the tour includes 3 meals a day: breakfasts at the hotels at days 2, 3, 4, lunches at days 2 and 3, and dinners at days 1, 2, 3. 

What will the weather be like +

The weather on the Kola Peninsula is unstable and quite extreme. There is a high probability of sudden temperature changes from 0°C to -30°C, also there may be strong winds and blizzards. Please, make sure, that you have warm clothing (if you don't have you can rent a set of warm clothing right on the site)
