The Kuril Islands are one of the best places to learn the amazing nature of the Far East. Your journey will consist of two parts: first you will spend some time in Sakhalin, then you will explore Kunashir.
In your Sakhalin journey, you will swim in the Sea of Okhotsk, enjoy the sight of lagoons, ravines, grottoes, and waterfalls, and go hiking. You will encounter seals and Japanese cranes as well as sea fauna seen beneath the clean waters.

A comfortable ship will take you to Kunashir. The island has lots of things for you to see: fumarole fields, volcanoes, hot lakes and unique Cape Stolbchaty, a UNESCO monument.
The program might be subject to adjustments depending on the weather, force majeure, and changes in the ship schedule
Itinerary
The journey begins in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, and you have to get there on your own.
Day 1 Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk tour
You will be met at the airport and transferred to the hotel. After lunch with fresh seafood in a Japanese restaurant NIHON MITAI, you will have a guided tour of the city. You will visit "Gorny Vozdukh" ski resort. There is a grand view of the city from here.
After returning to the hotel, you will have dinner on your own.
Day 2 Ship to Kunashir
You will be taken to the port of Korsakov and board the ship Igor Fakhrutdinov to travel to the island of Kunashir. Your destination is the city of Yuzhno-Kurilsk. The ship will navigate along the coastline of the Aniva Peninsula. You will see cut rocks and hills in taiga. Beyond Cape Aniva is the entrance to the open Sea of Okhotsk. Seabird flocks and dolphins will accompany the ship all the way.
You will have lunch and dinner on the ship (not included in the price of the tour).
Day 3 Chyortov Palets, Chyortovy Vorota and Kisly creek
Early in the morning when approaching the island, you will enjoy the breathtaking view of the magnificent Tyatya Volcano. Stand on the deck to marvel at its beauty and power.
You will be met at the seaport of Yuzhno-Kurilsk and taken you to the hotel. Then you will have a tour over the neighborhood. You will visit the Chyortov Palets (Russian for Devil's Finger) stack and the Chyortovy Vorota (Russian for Devil's Gates) rocks on the Pacific coast.
In the evening you will come back to the hotel and have dinner in a café.
Day 4 Mendeleev volcano
In the morning, you will go a medium-difficulty route to the Big Fumarole Field of Mendeleev Volcano. The volcano is 890-meter high. You will travel 17 kilometers by transport and then hike for 2.5 hours through bamboos (the time is specified for a one-way hiking route). On route there will be stops for having some rest.
The last part of the way before coming to the field (150-200 meters) is a channel of a volcanic stream. You will have to climb among stones. Then you will have a stop on the fumarole field for two hours. You will have a lunchbox for lunch.
You will examine the fumaroles and solfataras, swim in hot springs and then go back to the hotel.
Day 5 Golovnin Volcano
Your destination on this day is Golovnin Volcano. You will travel the first 42 kilometers by transport, then hike for 2.5 hours. You will have a stop in caldera of Golovnin Volcano for two hours and explore it.
There are lakes Kipyashcheye and Goryacheye. You can enjoy swimming in the second one. In the evening you will go back to the hotel and have a dinner in a café.
Day 6 Cape Stolbchaty
This day is for high-difficulty hiking route to Cape Stolbchaty. The cape was designated by UNESCO as a natural monument of world importance. You will walk along Stolbovo Ecological Path, see hot mud springs and reach the coastline (8 km, the walking part can be shortened upon request). You will observe the volcanic rocks formed of penta- and hexagonal stone poles.
Please, pay attention, that this hiking route is rather difficult. You will have to overcome very narrow rocky areas of the coast. In some places the path will pass through the cliffs at an altitude of 3-4 meters above the sea.
The cape is open on three of its sides and is located on the coastline of the Sea of Okhotsk so you could swim or fish if you wish. There will delicious fish soup for lunch. In the evening you will come back to the hotel and have a dinner in a café
Day 7 Farewell to Kunashir
You will be transferred to the seaport, where you will board the ship and depart Kunashir. You will have lunch and dinner onboard (not included in the price of the tour).
Day 8 Arrival in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk
You will have lunch and dinner onboard (not included in the price of the tour).
By evening, the ship will reach the port of Korsakov. You will be met there and transferred to a hotel in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
Day 9 Tikhaya Bay and Zametny Island
After breakfast, you will go to the East Coast of the Sea of Okhotsk. This is a 135-kilometer one-way distance. On the way you will see the Japanese Tori Gates that were erected in front of Shinto temples. There is a chance to find amber on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk and maybe you will be lucky to get one.
You can buy fresh-boiled crabs during the intermediate stop in the village of Vzmorye. Upon arrival, you will take a coastline route. You will see lagoons, grottoes, and ravines, Japanese cranes and seals. The waters here are so clean you can enjoy the sight of underwater flora (latissima, sea grapes, etc.) and fauna (crabs, crimps, soldier crabs, etc.).
Climb the terraces to witness the amazing herbs and edelweiss, plumb rocks that flank the island, black stones in green caps, and rolling waves. In the evening, you will go back to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
Day 10 Cape Giant
After breakfast, you will have a trip to the coast of the sea of Okhotsk (100 km, 3 hours). Along the way you will have stops on viewing points.
You will have a walk along the coast (approximately 2 km one way) and explore Cape Giant and Ptichyi Cape (Russian for Bird Cape). Bays, grottoes, stone arches and colonies of birds will take your breath away.
For lunch, you will have lunch boxes with caviar, Far Eastern salads and tea Sakhalin herbs. After coming back to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, you will have dinner on your own.
Day 11 A free day
Today you will have a free day. You can go to the fish market or souvenir shops and visit a museum.
Day 12 Homecoming
After lunch at the hotel, you will be brought to the airport.

By default, we offer double rooms at Lotos hotel 3* in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (5 nights). Each room of Lotos hotel has a separate bathroom, an air conditioning system, a large bed, satellite and cable TV as well as free internet access. A laptop is provided free of charge.
In Yuzhno-Kurilsk you will live in Flagman hotel (4 nights). Double and single rooms have a sink and a toilet, with showers and saunas located one per floor. The triple suit has two rooms, one of which has two French beds, the other one has a couch; the room has all amenities.
Optionally, you can book another hotel or single-room accommodation for an extra fee. Your alternative option for Kunashir is Iceberg 2 hotel. Single rooms have a view of the Sea of Okhotsk. Tyatya Volcano can be seen when the weather is nice.

We highly recommend to get a tick-borne encephalitis vaccination, especially for May-June arrivals. In Russia vaccination is done in 2 parts. The first vaccine is made 45 days before arrival to Russia. The second vaccine — 7-14 days before arrival to the region.
